Leonberg
Németh Csaba saw us with his great hospitality in Leonberg. We could eat pomme frites again for so long long time. So we ate it as much as we could day and night. It tasted really good with cold beer while we were watching football matches and lazing the time away as better as we could.
We fixed our steeds a little bit too. We installed the brake shoes, cleaned the chain and the cog. Then we changed the front exterior tire with the back one, which was frayed through the 3000 km. So we didn’t laze all the time away.
In the evening we went out to a nice pub for drinking beer, where actually was a “ take two, pay one “ discount on beer. We discussed life’ s great problems, then helped each other to go home, and of course we ate some pomme frites before we’re going to bed. Just because it tasted so good.
There is no gainsaying it stood in good stead that two days rest in Leonberg.
After we said goodbye we hit the road toward Stuttgart.
Stuttgart, Munich
Stuttgart’s center fascinated us so much. Not necessarily because of the beautiful buildings we found there, but because we found a city that came to life.
People were sitting and walking in parks, they were playing chess or cards or just chatting with each other. It looked like a big anthill.
It was a pleasant experience for me to see this aspect of life.
Sad to say countries are really defunct in Hungary and Austria, except Budapest. But Budapest is the capital....
We saw the same in Ulm and in Munich too, and I liked it more than the great medieval buildings.
As we left Munich we were looking for accomodation for the night , when a nice married couple asked us with the Germans famous kindness whether they could help us.
We complained of our problem and it wasn’t a problem anymore. Joaqim and Brigitte saw us that night.
It was astonishing for us, that they prepared breakfast for us and left early in the morning while we were still sleeping.
They had a clever dog. When Joaqim hid something in the house the dog found it every time.
Berchtesgaden
We had payed a visit at Samhuber family in Berchtesgaden before we left southeastern Germany. This was a recent regenerating point for us.
Berchtesgaden is a real paradise for sportsmen. There is a beautiful lake, the Königsee, enormous mountains, the Alps, and of course fresh mountain air.
In summertime man can swim, ride bicycle, canoening or just run, and in wintertime ski, snowboard, ice-skateing.
We felt at home ourselves in this region. We spent two days there and never were bored.
Schorsch was our guide for the first day, then we decided to go for a ridge tour on the second day. The aim was the Höher Göll ( 2521m ) . It runs along the Austrian-German border.
By the way we visited Hitler’s “Eagle’s Nest”. It was designed and built for Adolf Hitler’s 50th Birthday by his personal secretary and Head of the Nazi Party Chancellery martin Bormann.
The monument is called “Kehlsteinhaus” in German because of it was originally intended to be a “Teahouse” for the head of the Third Reich.
The allied bombing and battles of World War II left the building intact and today the Eagle’s Nest remains in its original state. In the years after the war, the Eagle’s Nest and the surrounding area of Berchtesgaden remained a part of US Armed Forces property in southeastern Germany. They returned the area to Germany in the 1990s.
There we were able to walk around the grounds at 1834m ( 6017 feet ) altitude and enjoy the spectacular scenery.
Gizelle cooked for us delicious foods during this two days. They were Outward Bound teachers some years ago and told us stories about these days while we were watching the sunset covering the Alps in red light.
